When Donald Trump becomes the next president of the U.S., Mexico isn’t going to be very open to American tourists, and can you blame them? So before Trump goes and spoils it for all of us, make the most of being the iconic American tourist, practice your awful Spanish, order some street tacos, and return home with a cool sombrero and the tackiest trinkets money can buy.

Let’s start with one of the classic spring break locations. I’m sure if anyone considers a trip to Mexico, their first search is likely Cabo – safe, iconic, and a whole lot of American tourists. So if you want to spend your days at a hotel sipping margaritas during the day and partying at Cabo Wabo Cantina at night, this may be the spot for you.

Any place with beach in the name is clearly going to be a pretty good time. Lay on idyllic beaches, swim amongst Mayan Ruins or through the second longest coral reef in the world. But if you’re not one of those cliché tourists who like to just stick to the water, head to Chichen Itza, one of the 7 wonders of the modern world.
Oaxaca

If you like food, specifically cheese, this may be the place for you. Full of colonial buildings, as well as indigenous cultures, Oaxaca is not only an area flourishing with history and culture but also with delicious food. Try barbacoa, the original Mexican BBQ; Oaxacan Champurrado, or hot chocolate; Chapulines, fried insects; and of course, the famous Oaxacan string cheese.

Mexico City is probably not a top choice for many people’s idyllic vacation given its reputation for danger, violence, and poverty. But it turns out this city is actually relatively safe, so long as you don’t act like a dumb American. So if you like to be a little risky and want a real adventure in one of the world’s largest cities, visit Mexico City. Explore museums, historical landmarks and have a taste of Mexico’s rich metropolitan culture.

This central city is the ideal spot for any person who likes learning. Full of history, well-preserved colonial and Spanish architecture, art, great food, culture and charm, San Miguel is one of Mexico’s gems. This city is well equipped for any tourist who wants to walk around taking pictures and wearing a fanny pack.

When you search for images of Tulum, all you see is blue seas, rugged coastlines, and sandy beaches. It is definitely the ideal place to top up your tan, just without the obnoxiousness of any large Mexican resort location (aka Cabo or Cancun). Explore the Sac Actun or LabnaHa Cenotes and Eco Park caves for some beautiful natural wonders. After that, your best bet is probably to return to the beach.
Tijuana

Tijauna is one of Mexico’s infamous border cities – yes this is where Trump plans on erecting his fantasy wall. If you want to see scary signs and corpses hanging from highways or hang out with Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación this may be the place for you. Although you can travel to Tijuana safely and have a good time, if you really want to be carefree this may not be the place for you. Though the city has gotten safer, there remains high crime rates.
